Professor Wright has been involved in health informatics since 1980, when he co-founded the Open Software Library with David McKendrick. Enjoying a dual career in consultancy and academia over the last decade, he is known for his work on the Rainbow series, Health Information education and evaluation studies. He is the programme director for the MSc. Health Informatics (Organisational Development) at The University of Winchester and the Director of CHIRAD.

He is the General Manager (part-time) of the Hawthorn Medical Centre (Swindon) and a part-time GP tutor Swindon, Kennett and NW Wiltshire.

His research includes a review of the NHS IM&T Strategy, evaluation of clinical systems, development of criteria for risk assessment of systems implementation.
