Adrian has been involved in health informatics since joining the UK National Health Service in 1981 as Director of Computing at St Thomas’ Hospital, London and King’s Fund Fellow. In 1986, he joined the Centre for Information Technology, first on secondment then as Principal Consultant. This organisation became the NHS Information Management Centre and Adrian was promoted to Assistant Director, then to Director. His particular areas of responsibility included the NHS Information Standards Boards, "Requirements for Accreditation", "Standards Enforcement in Procurement" and, from 1995-98, managed the NHS’s Y2K programme.

He took early retirement in September 2000 to concentrate on consultancy work.

In addition to his experience of health informatics, he has a broad background, particularly in telecommunications and computer networking. While at University College London in the early 1970s, he was part of a small team which implemented the first link between Europe and the ARPANET, the precursor of the Internet.

He has also been heavily involved in international standardisation work for over twenty years and was the Chairman of the European Workshop for Open Systems Expert Group on Healthcare from 1991-97. He has represented the UK on many international committees, most recently CEN/TC 251 and ISO/TC 215 (both entitled "Health Informatics") and various of their working groups.

Adrian also has an academic background, having held posts at University College London and Hatfield Polytechnic (now the University of Hertfordshire) as well as having been Visiting Professor in Information Management at University College Northampton. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science by the University of Hertfordshire in 1994.
