WSU and CHIRAD - MSc in South Africa

Saturday, 21 October 2006
CHIRAD is involved in teaching and administration of an MSc in Health Informatics course in Eastern Cape province, South Africa.

A new partnership between Walter Sisulsu University, Umtata (Mthatha), South Africa (WSU) and United Kingdom’s University of Winchester is set to take the standard of the Eastern Cape Health Department to even greater heights.

The initiative – launched in June at the Mthatha Campus - is to make WSU the center of excellence in developing, training and application of Health Informatics in clinical practice for the province and South Africa.

This will solve the challenge of the Eastern Cape Department of Health in finding health information.

Present at the launch were Professor Graham Wright and Doctor Peter Murray from the University of Winchester and Doctor Nolwazi Mbananga from Medical Research Council.

A delighted Professor Khaya Mfenyana, WSU’s Interim Vice-Principal: Academic Support, defined the launching of the Health Informatics program as a dream come true

Saturday, 21 October 2006

CHIRAD is the Centre for Health Informatics Research and Development.

CHIRAD is probably the first virtual R&D centre for Health Informatics. Its aim is to provide an environment for the development of Health Informatics as an academic subject. It is incorporated as a company limited by guarantee and is not VAT-registered, i.e. it is a not-for-profit organisation. It is based primarily within the School of Social Sciences, The University of Winchester. (formerly King Alfred’s Winchester)

CHIRAD directors, Prof Graham Wright who works part-time at The University of Winchester and Dr Helen Betts, who is the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science, lead a team of 22 members who either hold Academic posts in other institutions or have visiting research fellowships at The University of Winchester.

A primary objective for CHIRAD is to be able to supply R&D projects with a blend of academics and consultants. The Centre offers a wide range of Informatics experience. Consultancy projects are commissioned by sponsors and internal projects may be considered by the Director, where they have an academic base.

CHIRAD has become the first UK academic institutional member of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA). It has associations with centres of excellence around the world, including Erasmus University Rotterdam, Monash University, Stanford University and the University of Heidelberg.

CHIRAD has a formal Memorandum of Understanding with the Medical Research Council of South Africa with whom it is currently engaged in activities in South Africa.

Five of the CHIRAD team are members of the European Commission expert panel and have experience evaluating EC projects.

CHIRAD maintains three main websites - each has a separate section here to describe it and can be accessed from the 'CHIRAD people' link in the 'Modules' menu.

A list of publications is available at http://www.chirad.org.uk/rec_pubs.htm and current projects at http://www.chirad.org.uk/projects.htm and http://www.chirad.info the open source website run by CHIRAD.

CHIRAD is proud to be an academic institutional member of IMIA, the International Medical Informatics Association - www.imia.org
