An international consultant of many years standing, Alan previously managed national training programmes on behalf of the NHS Executive. Before that he was responsible for information systems to support the NHS & Community Care Act and the Korner initiative. Originally coming from a systems analysis background, he has a record of managing successful IT development, implementation and training projects. Currently assisting with strategic health information systems for developing countries, Alan maintains a professional interest in human and organisational issues of health informatics.

Alan’s external activities include:

  • Member LMSG BCS (former executive committee member)

Janette Bennett

Janette is currently employed as Senior Clinical Advisor to BT Health Executive NHS programmes.

She initially commenced her career as a nurse in the NHS 26 years earlier. In that time she gained experience in a number of clinical areas and roles, her last being that of Clinical Nurse Specialist in Intensive and High Dependency Care.

Janette also has management qualifications and went on to develop, implement and project manage a trust wide Integrated Clinical Information System. This experience led to an informatics role at regional level.

Janette is an accredited PRINCE practitioner and has a Masters in Health Care Policy and Organisation. This combination of theory and practice has led to a deep understanding of the NHS, how it works, how clinicians and management interact and how to bring about change using IT as a catalyst and enabler.

My interests lie in the areas of nursing information, information seeking, use of high-fidelity simulation in education and health care informatics. My dissertation research, which utilized a 'concept development focus', was funded by Gamma Kappa chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. Currently, I am focusing on health informatics, patient safety and disclosure along with use of high fidelity patient simulation in nursing education.

Karl Øyri

Employed as a Nurse Manager and Researcher at The Interventional Centre (http://www.ivs.no ) at Rikshospitalet University Hospital in Oslo, Norway.
Have 15 years of clinical practice from ICU and Cardiothoracic Surgery, and 10 years from healthcare research and administration.
Registered Critical Care Nurse, and holds a Master of Nursing Science from University of Oslo.
Current research: wireless biomedical sensors, wireless sensor networks, information retrieval from healthcare software applications.
Is involved in a number of research projects (http://www.ivs.no/wsn ) supported and funded by the Norwegian Reserach Council, Nordic Innovation Centre, MedCoast Scandinavia and Innovation Norway.
Interested in healthcare informatics, and Open Source Software applications.
Member of the Norwegian Association for Nursing Informatics. Former Board member of the Norwegian Critical Care Nurses Association, European federation of Critical Care Nursing associations and the World Federation of Critical Care Nurses. Current President of the Norwegian Society for Medical Informatics. Co-Chair of EFMI LIFOSS WG and IMIA-SIG-NI OSNI WG.

 Rod Ward is a nurse with a clinical background in Accident and Emergency and 15 years in nurse education. His masters dissertation examined the teaching of IM&T to pre regisration student nurses and he has since been involved with various health informatics education programmes, with particular emphasis on e-learning components. He became involved with the Internet and World Wide Web developments in the early 90s and since 2000 has been the project manager for NMAP The UKs gateway to high quality Internet resources for Nurses, Midwives and Allied Professions.
