The Inaugural IMIA OSWG Award for 2006 was made to Dr Ignacio Valdes in recognition of his outstanding work in the promotion of free/libre and open source software in health and health informatics, and in particular through his website Linux Medical News. The presentation of the award took place during the AMIA OSWG meeting in Washington DC, USA on November 13, 2006, and was made by Dr Peter Murray, IMIA Vice President for WG and SIG, and past Chair of the IMIA OSWG.

The IMIA Board has agreed to the formation of the IMIA Open Source Working Group (OSWG) Annual Achievement Award. The Award will be "given to a person, group or organisation that has, in the view of the Award Committee, demonstrated commitment to, and a track record of, active involvement and achievement in the promotion of free/libre and open source software in the health informatics domain. The award may be given for significant achievement within the preceding year, or as a 'long service' award for contribution over a significant period of time." It is anticipated that the Inaugural Award (2006) will be made at the AMIA2006 conference - more new later. In addition, the IMIA Board has approved the proposal that the IMIA OSWG co-sponsor the Annual Linux Medical News Award - see http://www.linuxmednews.com/1161188444/index_html

The Open Source Health Informatics Working Group (OSWG) of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA - www.imia.org) brings together experts and interested individuals from a wide range of health professions and with a range of interests in the potential application of free/libre and open source solutions within their domains of expertise. LATEST: As of June 2006, the new Chair is Prof. Graham Wright. The IMIA OSWG has close links - and much common membership - with the IMIA-NI OSNI WG (Open Source Nursing Informatics Working Group of IMIA's Special Interest Group in Nursing Informatics) - see www.osni.info - Much of the effort and development that is currently happening in on the OSNI website and in the OSNI group - so have a look at the site there for updates. |
